Tiverton Town 4 (Palmer 5, 70, Howe 36, Bissett 64)

‘Some guys have all the luck as Palmer instigates defeat’

By Avril Lancaster

It was a disappointing day at Cockrams for the ‘Rockies ‘ as we crashed to a 4-1 defeat to a Tiverton Town side that was relegated from the Pitching In Southern League Premier South last season.

Tiverton Town arrived in North Dorset for their first ever encounter with Shaftesbury on the back of a 3-1 win over Hartpury FC on Tuesday night. Shaftesbury welcomed Luke Burbidge back to the fold with James Ward, Ollie Hughes and Brandon Mundy all on the bench. Key players Tom Jarvis (still in a boot) and Sonny Pike with his cast still on his arm took a spectating berth from the side.

The visitors took the lead after five minutes when captain Ed Palmer saw his cross shot seemingly deflect into the top corner. A downward header by Owen Howe in the 36th minute gave the Devon side a two goal cushion. Joshua Bissett’s early effort really should have put them ahead after three minutes yet he skewered the ball wide. Dawid Regula was set up by Burbidge to score yet the flag was up for offside.

Tiverton Town were ravenous and Matthew Wood had headed the ball over the bar from dead on range. It was a half we need to move on from quickly and a swirling wind breezed across Cockrams making it difficult for us to get out of our half and putting them on the counter.

Brett Pitman put away a penalty after a handball decision to reduce arrears in the 47th minute and Harry Morgan very nearly levelled the game bringing a good save out of Louis Smith preventing Shaftesbury from gaining parity in the game. Pitman has now scored for in five games since returning to the club.

This proved to some up our misfortune as the ball slipped the ‘Rockies ‘ defence into the path of Joshua Bissett who clipped their third goal over Oscar Glover into the net in the 64th minute. Ed Palmer hooked in the fourth from a corner six minutes later to complete the scoring for the visitors captains second of the afternoon.

All in all we are all a bit down about today’s game yet Tiverton Town looked to have made some progress from results like the 8-0 thrashing at Farnham Town in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South with a young team. Asa Hall and David Steele have signed some players capable of getting them into the play off places. For now we have players coming back and a chance to make amends against Slimbridge AFC on Tuesday. We simply have to move on from this today.

🌟 Star Man- Ed Palmer (Tiverton Town) – A colossal presence in the visitors defence and getting up to score two goals. Joshua Bissett’s contribution also impressive.

🌟 Alefe Santos- Despite a very disappointing result Alefe looked like he was regaining his usual form. Both Harry Morgan and Alefe worked very hard to create openings. It just wasn’t our day.

It was as you were in both camps as the second half began. It would be Greaves side that grasped the nettle first when Albie Hopkins got past our defence and did well to stay on his feet to shot fire past Taylor to put Frome Town into the lead after 51 minutes. George Dowling planted in the third going into the final quarter of the game and it looked like goodnight Vienna for us.

With Tom Hewlett and George Higgins on as substitutes we went at it.Milligan knew it was stick or twist time. We gambled to go at it and it paid off.

Holmes got inside the Frome defence to turn in his first getting past the Frome Town defence and clip the ball past Philips into the corner with ten minutes left. Game on and the Cockrams ground lit up.

Then in the 83rd minute Sonny Pike delivered a peach of a ball as two ‘Robins ‘ collided with each other and found Brown who put it on a plate for Holmes who put the chance away. 3-3! Could we win it?

Holmes is top of our scoring charts now with 18 goals and has really been on fire. With six minutes added on a downward header from Harvey Bradbury missed by inches which really would have been something. Still a point with ten men against quality opposition shows how far our club has travelled in recent years.
