SFC 8 – 2 Christchurch FC

Saturday 30th December 2023Velocity Wessex League Premier Division

Shaftesbury 8 (Pitman 13, 18, 32, 58, 75, 81, 85, Devlin 68)

Christchurch 2 (Simpson 67, Derick 73)

Brett Pitman moved onto 40 goals with an incredible seven goal haul at Cockrams this afternoon as the ‘Rockies’ set out to banish the memories of last weekend’s trip to Sherborne Town, and to get back on track ending 2023 on top of the table in a year that had started with defeat at Pagham last season! A day I will never forget that one!

Christchurch actually started the brighter and Shiv Roushbainai was looking a tricky customer with Steve Walker and Sam Davidson tracking back to eliminate any threat as joint managers Luke Burbidge and Jim Milligan were mindful of last weeks two minute hit by the ‘Zebras’, it was a different story today.

Luke Holmes sent in a corner in the 13th minute which Pitman headed in past Will Butler to give us the lead. Five minutes later Holmes switching flanks sent in another cross which Pitman side volleyed into the net. Liam Farrugia returning to the side lifted a long ball in over the Christchurch defence and Pitman looped a header over Butler into the net for the third.

Lyle Simpson found himself clean through just before half time and really should have reduced arrears yet Shane Murphy was alert and made a brilliant stop to keep him out. Christchurch had come here to play and full credit to them.

The ‘Rockies’ swarmed on the visitors in the second half with Cameron Beard now up and going close. Holmes was spinning in the ten, with Aaron Roberts overlapping to fashion openings for Pitman. That duly arrived when Holmes cut inside and Pitman headed in the 4th goal in the 58th minute.

Christchurch did not give in and Shiv Roushbainai was marauding in on our defence with Louis Kellaway as ever along with Steve Devlin breaking up the play. They did get a goal back when Simpson finished off a corner. A minute later Devlin sent in a wind assisted ball that eluded Butler and went into the net for our fifth.

Christchurch came back at us and Roushbainai cracked the bar with Ewang Derick netting their second to make it 5-2. They could have got back into the game further as they pressed, yet fifteen minutes from time Pitman struck again when Beard set him up to slot home the sixth goal. Beard himself headed against the post when Pitman set him up.

Asa Philips, Ash Wells and Claudio Herbert all came on with the former two back from injury. Herbert as ever was busy and creating openings. Eddie Perrett had an effort which just cleared the bar. That really would have iced the cake.

It was 7-2 when Roberts beat his man, cut in and there was the Master himself to pull another rabbit out of the hat to put the ball away for a double hat trick! Not content with that Devlin then crossed the ball in and Brett headed in the 8th goal and his 7th of what was a quite barmy afternoon in appalling weather.
