Dorset Senior Cup 1st Round

Shaftesbury 3 (Barnett, Pitman, Beard)

Swanage Town & Herston 0The ‘Rockies’ earnt a trip to the Avenue Stadium to face Dorchester Town in the Dorset Senior Cup after the ‘Swans’ put up a resilient showing in the 1st round tie at Cockrams.

Curtis Lane and Ollie Mayo made starts, with Claudio Herbert also starting after his dazzling display in the second half at Christchurch on Saturday. Luke Holmes, Billy Maybury, Shane Murphy and Ash Wells took a night off with skipper for the night Steve Devlin taking over. Jake Graziano started once again.

Murphy and Wells were named on the bench as a precaution. Kai Storr took on glove duties for the evening. Ollie Marsh earnt himself a place on the bench as Luke Burbidge and Jim Milligan looked to give some of the younger players an opportunity. Lane was an outstanding player in the now defunct reserve side.

It was indeed Herbert that caused ‘Swans’ keeper Tyler Hibbs to push a shot round the post early on as the former Winchester City player took on the visitors defence.

Otherwise Swanage held their own and their best chance fell to Jack Hughes, until Jordan Barnett put us ahead just before half time with a free kick that swerved into the top corner for his first senior goal for Shaftesbury.

Mayo who has been a regular on the first team bench grew into the game playing alongside Callum Sweeney as managers Luke Burbidge and Jim Milligan took an opportunity to give everyone an opportunity. Louis Kellaway was back in midfield and went very close to on his return to furthering the lead.

It was however Brett Pitman who got the second goal having his penalty saved by Hibbs, yet firing in his 27th goal of the season from the rebound. Hibbs becoming the first keeper to save a penalty this season from the ex Portsmouth and Ipswich Town striker.

Sweeney hit the crossbar before Mayo fed in Cameron Beard to rasp in the third goal in off the underside of the crossbar to mark his 97th appearance with a goal as he moves nearer to joining Ashley Pope (now Bashley) in the 100 club!

Conal Morrison returned as a second half substitute after a long period on the sidelines and made a stable return to the side. It has been frustrating for the former Wimborne Town and Portadown player who has much talent.

It was good for morale that striker Greg Peel was there and up on crutches after getting badly injured at Christchurch joining George Bennett, Asa Philips and Liam Farrugia on the injury list as Physio Harry Vickery has his work cut out as winter kicks in.

What is positive is the lads who are out of rested are their for their teammates as we continue to push forward and look forward to a very difficult looking trip to Baffins Milton Rovers on Saturday in the Velocity Wessex League Premier Division weather permitting of course!
