Sherborne 2 – 0 SFC

Velocity Wessex League Premier Division

Sherborne Town 2 (Herrin 20, Wood 22)

Shaftesbury 0

Our title hopes took a dent with this defeat at Sherborne Town this afternoon. With Callum Sweeney missing the management drafted in Eddie Perrett yet otherwise we were good to go with Greg Peel and Brett Pitman looking to continue our eight game winning run.

The game started in a swirling icy wind with Sherborne Town sitting deep and keeping Peel and Holmes at bay. Peel had our first effort which went over the bar and then Steve Devlin curled a free kick after Peel had been brought down that ‘Zebras’ keeper Liam Norris took out well.

Sherborne Town took the lead in the 20th minute when Shane Murphy couldn’t quite hold onto a high ball into our box and Anth Herrin put the loose ball in to spark much celebration. Two minutes later Ben Wood hit an absolute cracker from an angle into the far corner of the net to leave us totally shell shocked.

We pressed. Mazy runs from Luke Holmes and hitting balls forward to Brett Pitman yet Sherborne knew when to go narrow and closed us down well to be fair. Murphy made a superb save from Wood to prevent the home side going further ahead.

We had a penalty appeal for handball turned away but in truth it was not our day and five minutes into the second half after Peel was felled and Pitman’s penalty was saved by Norris. Devlin and Aaron White earning yellows in the melee.

We pressed and Steve Walker’s header was disallowed for an infringement. Billy Maybury then ended up with a yellow after a foul. Claudio Herbert was brought on with fifteen minutes left and had a header just over the top of the bar.

In truth it was Sherborne’s day after five defeats in a row. As for ourselves we need to get back on it next week against Christchurch at Cockrams. Every unbeaten run or losing run has to end and it did today for both sides.
